MONOPRINT

Final Pieces

How does the monoprint process differ from other forms of art you’ve worked on?

The monoprint process can be tedious to do and I tend to get bored halfway through. Usually when I do other forms of art, I can switch to a different part of the process if I get bored but with printmaking it’s hard to stop in the middle and start something else.

What does a print offer?

It offers a unique way to make an image.

Is there an advantage to creating a product that is less direct than painting or drawing?

It is easier and faster to replicate the same image.

It’s certain you’ve had frustrations during this unit, figuring out materials, trying to find the red ink, making sure you don’t print backwards, or onto the felt instead of the paper, or get ink on your forehead, or gotten in a fist fight because too many people are in the way, but–when you let that stuff go, what have you found that works for you?

My main frustration was the paper not working how i was expecting it to so I would put in a ton of effort only for it not to work. I also struggled with not getting fingerprints everywhere on my prints Something that worked for me was making my designs less complicated and more simple shapes and using collage.

How have your ideas about images morphed?

I first started out trying to make a slug on a log but the paper kept ripping and not printing correctly so I decided to just do the slug. After I had kinda figured out how printing worked, I decided to make the slug dreaming of his friends. I also decided to use collage to make it slightly easier to get more details.

What risks have you taken? What have “mistakes” taught you?

I took risks by layering colors, so for the final piece I went in first with yellow and then over that with blue to make green. My mistakes taught me that it’s hard to get really small details.

What are ways you can generate more ideas?

I get my inspiration from nature, so going for a walk or hike.

What inspires you? What are you envious of?

I was envious of the detail that other people were able to get in their prints as that is what I really struggled with.
